We tested tons of apps and discovered a handful of newer – and incredibly useful – ones that we think are worthy of a download
Savvy Navvy
Savvy Navvy has all the features that longtime users of navigation apps are fond of: updated charts, route planning, live GPS tracking, weather overlays, tidal data, and more. It’s incredibly user-friendly, and the creators say it’s like Google Maps for boats. But what makes Savvy Navvy stand out is its partnerships with marine conservation organizations including ProtectedSeas, Clean Sailors, and The Ocean Conservation Trust. These partnerships allow the app to show boaters key environmental information, such as the locations of sensitive seabeds, marine protected areas, and other regulated zones, helping you know where you can and can’t enter, anchor, exceed certain speeds, or hop ashore. App and charts are free; access the rest of the features with a Premium subscription for $99/year
Ditch
Perennial Atlantic Intracoastal travelers are probably familiar with Bob423 and his famous magenta line, following what is supposed to be the ideal path through the ICW and its skinniest, shiftiest waters. But what if, instead of just one track, you could see dozens or even hundreds, all made by real boaters who passed through before you? Ditch is an AI-powered navigation aid that shows boaters the real tracks of previous boaters and color codes them by verified “Local Knowledge” paths or “other” boats in addition to using those previous tracks to synthesize one recommended “Smart Path.” Save routes, customize the data you’re interested in, and explore how others in some parts of the ICW are navigating shifting shoals, outdated aids to navigation, and tricky inlets. $30/year
