SPRINGFIELD, Va., February 28, 2022 – Boating Writers International, the professional association for writers, editors, publishers, bloggers, photographers, videographers and imagers in the recreational boating and fishing industry, bestowed three awards on BoatUS Magazine staff and contributors during a presentation recently held at the group’s annual meeting at the 2022 Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show.

The awards, which attracted 273 entries, recognized the best marine writing and content to winners across 15 categories. Recipients received a recognition plaque noting their “excellence in creating compelling stories about boating through entertaining, educational and inspiring journalism.”

BoatUS Magazine articles earned a first, second and third place across two categories.

Category: Environmental Awareness & Education (sponsored by Torqeedo)

First place: “American Marine Sanctuaries Welcome You” by BoatUS Magazine contributing editor Fiona McGlynn (June 2021 issue). The feature discusses how boaters have a role to play in ensuring their treasured fishing, diving, and cruising grounds can be enjoyed for generations to come. BWI Judge Wendy Mitman Clarke said of McGlynn’s feature, “Not only does this story educate about a little-known topic, it inspires boaters to become more involved in helping designate sanctuaries and provides concrete, useful information in an informative, pleasurable story.”

Third place: “The 2021 Red Tide Report” by BoatUS Magazine contributing writer Theresa Nicholson (June 2021 issue) Two years after the toxic event that devastated Florida's recreational and commercial boating, BoatUS took a look at current coastal conditions and whether mitigation steps have worked.

Category: Business of Boating (sponsored by Evinrude):

Second place: “Turn Your Passion into a Great New Career” by BoatUS Magazine senior editor Richard Armstrong (November/December 2021 issue). Are you or someone you know searching for the right career? The boating industry needs skilled technicians, and Armstrong’s story showed how they'll pay to train you.
