Boat Topcoat Painting Simplified

DIY Alert: A pair of new coatings from Interlux are easier to apply, with fewer steps, sand-free painting, and promise a longer lasting high-gloss finish.

The roll-and-tip application of topcoats is effective but time-consuming, and sometimes the results aren’t what we hope for. Toplac Plus, a new formula topcoat from Interlux, has an improved flow that takes the tipping out of the equation and allows for fast, easy roller application — while still providing the über-glossy finish we boaters love. Even better, multiple coats of Toplac can be painted on without sanding between applications.

Toplac is a one-part silicone alkyd enamel with low VOCs (volatile organic compounds), no MEKO (methyl ethyl ketoxime), and no diisocyanates, which can cause respiratory disease. No additives are necessary, and it can be applied above the waterline to gelcoated fiberglass, wood, or even aluminum and steel, according to Interlux.

There are 24 different colors to choose from (19 available now with five additional colors to be released later in 2024), and all are high gloss with UV protection. For deck applications, using Intergrip will take out the skidding and sliding.

Toplac is formulated to be applied over Interlux’s also-new Pre-Kote Plus, which replaces the existing Pre-Kote. The all-in-one primer and undercoat can be rolled or brushed for use above the waterline on most substrates, including metals, and boasts “improved flow, enhanced protection, and anticorrosion properties.” It also enhances the depth of the topcoat color.

For best results on gelcoat, Interlux recommends two coats of Pre-Kote Plus followed by two to three coats of Toplac, and claims best-in-class gloss and color retention that lasts longer.

Price per gallon from Defender: Toplac Plus, $183.99; Pre-Kote Plus, $159.99.
