Unique Learning Experience At Womens Sailing Conference, June 2
Whether one is new to sailing or looking to sharpen racing starts, the sixth annual Women's Sailing Conference has something for everyone as the event returns to Corinthian Yacht Club in scenic Marblehead, MA, on Saturday, June 2.
The all-day event of workshops is sponsored by BoatU.S. and organized by the National Women's Sailing Association. New topics covered this year include how to go up the mast safely, a review of boat systems, electronic navigation, and planning for a coastal cruise. Returning favorites include diesel engine maintenance, sail trimming, recovering crew overboard, charting basics and more.
The day at the Corinthian Yacht Club includes continental breakfast, box lunch, numerous handouts, and a gala dinner with a guest speaker. This year's speaker is Maureen McKinnon-Tucker, a member of the Disabled US Sailing Team who has just teamed up with top ranked Disabled US Sailing Team member Nick Scandone to campaign the SKUD 18 for a position with the US Sailing Team that will go to Beijing to compete at the 2008 Paralympic Games. The SKUD is a SKiff Universal Design two-person Paralympic keelboat.
"For women new to boating this is a fun, no-pressure learning opportunity," said Elaine Dickinson, who heads up the BoatU.S. Women in Boating outreach effort. “Even seasoned sailors learn something new or work on a special skill, and have a great time too. The Corinthian Yacht Club really rolls out the red carpet for us.”
BoatU.S. also supports a West Coast women’s sailing seminar, the BoatU.S. Santa Maria Cup, and other services including a women's boating Web site at http://www. BoatUS.com/women
The cost is $115 for NWSA members and $150 for non-members. The event is limited to 150, and usually sells out. To find out more or to register go to http:// WomenSailing.org or call 866-631-6972.
