Jim Nolan
Vice President, Underwriting
What
do you do at BoatUS Marine Insurance?
I manage the underwriting and administration of the insurance program.
How does your job impact our product or policyholders?
The Underwriting and Administration Departments basically provide the front
end customer service, working with each member on the details of each quote
and policy. We service virtually all customer needs in terms of the application
process, buying coverage and then keeping the coverage up to date as needed.
How
many years have you been with BoatUS?
I’ve been here 28 years. I actually took the job with the intent of it
being temporary until I found something better. My college major was in Hotel/Restaurant
and Tourism Management, but I’d always liked boating and here I am (still).
Do
you own a boat? If so, what kind and where do you use it?
I bought my first Day Sailor while in high school. I’d earned
money from painting houses, mowing lawns and doing other odd jobs
when a neighbor took me out as a regular crewman on his sail boat.
I’ve had a boat ever since and I now have a fishing boat,
3 kayaks, a personal watercraft plus the Day Sailor that I purchased
while in high school. We usually take them out with family and
friends around the Chesapeake Bay.
Your
favorite vacation spot?
My vacations have to include the outdoors, water, and hopefully
a golf course. Whether a beach or a mountain -- there always has
to be an opportunity to go boating.
Tell
us something that nobody knows about you.
I’ve grown oysters now for about 5 years. In the Chesapeake Bay, there
is less than 1% of the oyster population that existed when John Smith settled
at Jamestown. In the last several years, they’ve been decimated by over-fishing,
loss of habitat, several forms of parasites and natural predators. But we’ve
released about 5000-6000 oysters that I’ve grown from babies (called
spat). |
